Arabic: Personal Info and Preferences

Last chapter and then we can celebrate finishing the first unit. This chapter makes you realize why the first unit is so 'short.' It only has 4 chapters, where the others have almost 10 lessons, but this unit is jam packed with vocab and essential grammar lessons.

Really make sure you take your time: don't rush, remember the 80% rule, and practice your vocab! There seems to be a large amount of vocabulary in this chapter; however, that is largely due to learning numbers. Once you have the core numbers down (1 -10), you should be able to quickly learn how to count to 100!

Another important lesson this course has to offer is expanding on possessive suffixes. Take the time to train your ear to these endings as having a fundamental understanding in them will help you pick up more conversations in the future. You might not know the word, but you can pick up who the sentences is about by understanding these endings.

Below is the vocabulary that is covered in this lesson and it may seem a lot, but remember that it includes numbers. These can be repetitive and once you've learned the basics you will quickly be counting to 100!

You are done with Unit 1! If you are look for more resources to use to study, check out the sources below:
  • Mango has great review features at the end of each section including a reading and listening exercise. Also check out the flashcard and recap option!
  • Review this chapter summary and the use the review sheet for vocab.
  • All the vocab words are on my Memrise page.
  • This book goes over the basics and specifically touches on numbers and currency. It is free with kindle unlimited!
  • Review this podcast to review some of the professions from the previous lesson.
  • This video really helped me understand where and when to put the definite article on nouns and adjectives.
  • Songs to help train your ear. Note: it is far too early in your learning to understand a song completely. The point is to familiarize yourself with the different sounds commonly used in Arabic and to keep an ear out for the words you have learned.
    • Here is a song that goes over how to count. It is for children, but if listening to it helps you remember how to count play it over and over!
